Corporate League Finals Inspired Jacobs CC maul WorleyParsons CC
As the summer comes to an end, the first ever corporate league final’s stage was set for a magnific finale. Winning the toss was crucial to either team, as chasing a hefty total on Riley small could be a daunting task, considering the strong bowling line-ups of both teams. Worley won the toss and opted to bat first, that, though, was the only thing that went right for Worley that evening. On a pitch that offered genuine bounce, Jacobs’ seamers bowl the right channels to restrict any big hitting. The first wicket fell with Worley’s keeper Kaushik giving in on a run-out. This dismissal sparked off a procession of wickets, as four more wickets fell in quick succession. Two of the wickets came in the same over of Syed, both caught behind by Chirayu. Captain Ahsan was also out on a quick surprising full toss. At 47 for 5, Worley were limping towards a small total, but some sensible batting and late hitting from Khalid and Akshay got their total to a modest 97. Jacobs denied Worley of putting up a big total, thanks to some accurate and relentless bowling and their fielding turned out to be blemish-less.
Chasing a much smaller target, Jacobs CC knew that playing any ferocious strokes were needless and out of question. It was a litmus test for Jacobs as playing a steady knock from their batsmen was pivotal to their victory. Openers Chirayu and Soumya did exactly that and gave a perfect start to their team. Chirayu was out, caught behind at the end of 4th over, but that paved the way for Jitesh, the interim skipper for this game. A required run-rate of just over 6 runs wasn’t a tough task, but it was a question of who could hold their nerves in this big-game situation. Jitesh played a cool knock, while Soumya hit the ball around the park. Soumya lost his wicket at 55 runs, but Jacobs were heading to an easy win. Later on, Afsar and Jitesh scored another 30 runs in the next 4 overs and Jacobs needed a mere 22 runs from 4 overs and 8 wickets to go. Frustration kicked in for Worley, as their bowlers lost their cool and quite a few words were exchanged on the field. That didn’t make a difference to Jacobs as in the next over Jacobs went for the kill and bagged 21 runs with four boundaries. Jacobs wrapped up the game with an easy single to long on, winning their first ever Corporate Division title.
De-Crowned by CanAsia
On a beautiful Sunday morning, CanAsia proved that they could beat a juggernaut like Crown. Onlookers agreed that Canasia had little chance to win this match; given that ½ their roster was unavailable. Without players like Khuram C., Umar K.,Nadeem S, Mansoor and Jalal, what chance did they have.
Crown’s body language was relaxed and confident whereas CanAsia was focused & sharp. CanAsia’s senior members had started the mental preparation a week earlier; needing to prove a point to the league. Amjad won a toss and elected to bat, believing that his team could pressure Crown during the chase. His decision based on Crown’s losses against United, both losses occurring in a chase.
Adnan & the youngster Yasir Iqbal opened the inning. Kirmani indicated CanAsia’s intent with cracking cover drive for two followed by two fours in the cover region. Unfortunately he fell after few overs trying to pull a short pitch ball. Hamza Tariq played with determination, throughout his innings of 60. Canasia’s new opener Yasir iqbal played short but important innings, blunting the new ball attack. Shebaz’s 39 runs were vital to the total. Jawad Habib helped himself to a quick 20 runs with two huge sixes. Atiq Azam the new "CANASIA EAGLE" ended the inning with huge six over extra cover. Canasia had scored 188, which is a defendable total on Reilly large.
Amjad charged the troop with a pre-fielding speech. Amjad, Kirmani and Afzal had planned totally different strategy for this game. They decided to cover the boundaries and challenged Crown’s running game, which is a difficult prospect at Reilly. Farukh was forced to play in covers as his preferred on side was strategically defended. Habib’s fiery spell provided the crucial wicket of Farukh caught at point by Shehbaz. Shehbaz started with controlled swing and removed Crown,s debutant LBW for a duck. The inform khurram came to the wicket, just to see his stumps shattered by Shebaz with in swinger. Canasia stuck to its plan (midwicket boundary heavily manned) for Nasir, plugging his favourite area. Amjad’s bag of tricks (seam, swing & speed changes) put more pressure on Fakhir. Quickly the variety proved too much for young Fakhir, as he gave a catch at deep midwicket. Nasir was next to depart as he gave a towering catch to wicket keeper Kirmani.
Now 34 for 4, Crown was struggling to save their reputation. This was a crucial point in the match, two of the most devastating batsmen were in the middle. Baqir and Yawar started putting together the partnership which could win Crown the match.
Javad Habib’s experience spin was called for, he troubled both batsman with spin, bounce & line. Canasia had only four fielders in the circle with the rest patrolling the boundaries. Afzal bowled from the other end with his sharp leg cutters. These two bowling in tandem built pressure on the batting, stemming the flow of singles and forcing the need for big hits.
Kirmani’s lightning quick stumping of Baqir off of Afzal’s bowling which crippled Crown. Afzal’s next victim was the danger man Yawar, who had begun to open his shoulder and was looking dangerous. Mohsin a 12th man took an unbelievable catch in gully to give Afzal the impressive stats of 10 overs 29 runs and 2 important wickets.
Jawad teased Amir with his flighted deliveries, who took the bait and was stunningly caught at midwicket by Humza going for big six. Jawad finished with 10 overs, 28 runs for 2 wickets. His 2nd wicket was Muneeb caught brilliantly by Yaser. Amjad brought himself back to claim his 3rd victim by getting the last man out. Jawad took a difficult running catch at short square leg. Amjad finished with 10 overs giving up 27 runs and taking 3 wickets.
Crowned had lost by 40 runs and Canasia once again proved that even with out big names in there team they can beat the hot favorites just with their experience and strategic planning.
With Kc returning from a “man of the match” performance against Kenya, bolstered by Umar, Mansoor, Jalal & Nadeem returning to the line up for September games. CanAsia will prove a threat to any team in the league who is dreaming to be champion."
Masters 2009, Riley Park, August 22/23:

As last year, the sky gods smiled again on the Masters weekend held in Calgary on August 22/23 which saw two entertaining contests, but particularly the second one. Under warm, blue skies, the proceedings got off to a fine start as the Spirit of the Game shone brightly through when the Edmonton skipper, Steve Dutchin, who won the toss, and in true sportsmanlike manner, enquired whether Calgary wanted to bat or field first. He was left to make the call.
Game One:
Steve then strategically opted to send Calgary in to bat in hope of chasing. But the hosts methodically amassed a respectable and defendable total of 230 in their allotted 45 overs at Riley Large, with Trevor DeFreitas top-scoring with a patient and purposeful 62, ably abetted by the reliable, timeless class-act, Paul St. Rose contributing a routine, swashbuckling 48. Another ageless wonder from the north, Charlie Green, and let’s not say what age he is, chipped in with a surprising 3 for 50 in a steady, tidy spell, along with Khallid Bacchus who collaborated to claim three scalps of his own for 46.
Replying to a getable target, Edmonton quickly found themselves down a man when the score was only 12 with the run-out of Eric Mahabir who was stranded several feet shy of his crease. Number three wicketkeeper/batsman Sammy Naicken was second man to go to a dubious caught-at-wicket decision. He was replaced by the Edmonton skipper who was circumspect throughout his innings and only unleashed his trade-mark straight-batted pulls to the boundary when the opportunity presented itself. Wickets fell all around him as he carried his bat through for an unbeaten 74 in vain. Calgary won by a convincing margin of 91 runs.
Match Summary: Calgary 230/7 in 45 overs…T. DeFreitas 62, Paul St Rose, 48, S. Bhandari, 23, Max Richard, 18. Bowling: C. Green, 3/50, K. Bacchus, 3/46. Edm 139 all out, S. Dutchin 74 not out.
Game Two:
The brilliant, late-summer sunshine continued into Sunday. This time, Calgary won the toss and sent the visitors in. As the previous afternoon, lefty Steve Dutchin showed his redoubtable class as he authoritatively and disdainfully pummeled a weakened Calgary attack with mammoth slogs all around the ground. In a reduced match of 35 overs, he understood the importance and urgency of compiling a hefty score, in a hurry, so as to put the match out of reach and thus claiming the inaugural Masters Cup, since all Edmonton needed, as the defending champs, was a solitary victory. He was 12 shy of 150 when he was niftily stumped by keeper DeFreitas off the bowling of seldom-used Mike Singh in the penultimate over. Sammy Naicken, too, previously, was similarly stumped by the cat-like Defreitas for a stylish 30.
Edmonton walked off into the luncheon interval feeling pretty confident of victory whilst a few of the Calgary veterans appeared visibly deflated. But yours truly never doubted Calgary’s ability to pull it off. Using a different strategy to overcome a monumental task, the big, sensible hitters were promoted to three of the top four spots in the batting order and they did not disappoint.
Playing in his first Masters, left-hander Shakil Surve replicated the brilliance of Steve Dutchin and launched maximums all around the field before he was finally caught by Ron Beepat deep on the mid-wicket boundary after he had eclipsed Steve’s score by just one run. Trevor DeFreitas continued from where he left off the previous day and carried his bat for a determined 58 not out. Raymond Singh produced a scintillating cameo of 32 in just two and half overs.
Calgary overtook the massive Edmonton score in the 26th over for the loss of only two wickets to capture the inaugural Masters Cup in a rather convincing and comprehensive fashion.
Match Summary: Edmonton 268 in 35 overs, Steve Dutchin, 138, S. Naicken, 30.
Calgary: 271/2 in 26 overs, S. Surve 139, T. DeFreitas 58 n o, Raymond Singh, 32 n o.
N.B.: Man-of-the match, Game One: Trevor DeFreitas; Man-of the-match, Day Two, Shakil Surve; and Man-of the series, Steve Dutchin.
Note: I wish to thank all the volunteers for a job well-done and a special thank-you to Chris James, Art Alfonso, Ivan Mahelal, Spencer Gooden and Gord Oakes for making it another successful event. Now, it’s until next time at beautiful Victoria Park.

Stallions create history

For the first time in the 100 years of Riley Park, there has been no team that has made it to playoffs in their debut season. Stallions, the under dogs in this T20 tournament, had a rough start in a few early games. They came back strong defeating the experienced Canasia to clinch the last playoff spot. With a shaky start for the ballers, Canasia had a strong score of 50 runs in 8 overs. Nadeem Sheikh anchored the innings with a well-built 66 as he carried the bat through to the end. With a strong total of 151, Canasia felt very confident with their batting.
Stallions required a runrate of 7.55 per over to reach their target of 152. Canasia started off well in the second innings trying to create immense pressure on the opening batsmen. With an early runout, Canasia felt they were on top. But Stallions held their nerves as Hamza Tariq and Sudeepta Aurka played great knocks to carry the team into a great position to cross the finish line. The runrate kept decreasing and the pressure kept building on Canasia. Stallions fought through to the end defeating Canasia with 3 balls to spare in the 20th over.

Efficient Cavs II steamroll Canasia
It was an evening to savour for Cavs II bowlers and a match that Cavs II will reminisce for the rest for the season. Bowling first, Cavs II made two big impacts on Canasia, with Shah-ji loosing his wicket on the very first ball of the innings and Nadeem Sheikh found himself caught plumb. Cavs II equipped with two Stallions, Vaibhav & Laraib, utilized their most potent weapon and bowled exemplary line and length. Vaibhav conceded a mere 14 runs from his 4 overs in Riley small!! Cavs II setup some canny field positions and that worked to the advantage of their bowlers. Especially Devin, who bagged 4 wickets in his spell, mixing Yorkers and slower ones. Canasia could only rack up a score of 142 for 8.
With a fierce bowling line up Canasia seemed confident to defend their modest total and Cavs II chase wasn`t expected to be an easy one. Pacer Umar dented Cavs II by removing Vaibhav in the very first over, but Cavs II opener Abhijeet looked like a man with a plan. Abhijeet & Adeel played a slow and steady knock in the first 6 overs, but later flayed Nadeem and Amjad with some huge sixes and fours. With 10 overs gone and 75+ runs for 1 wicket on the scoreboard, Cavs were steering towards an easy win. But a reprisal was imminent from Canasia as they removed 3 wickets in the next 2 overs, including Abhijeet, who scored 65 with 5 sixes and 5 fours. With 60+ more required from 8 overs, Cavs II couldn`t afford to slow down, so in the next over, Jitesh hit 2 humongous sixes off Amjad and Devin smashed a boundary through covers. Devin was removed in the next over, but that paved the way for Rajul, the second best hitter in the team. Rajul waited only two balls before he went after the bowling. Next thing, the scores were level at the end of the 19th over. Jitesh & Rajul’s fierce knock in the last 8 overs, found many Canasian ruffling the back of their hair and Cavs brought the game home in the last over.
Its was a hard fought contest between the two teams, but Cavs II had the upper-hand right from the beginning, showing great bowling prowess and some spirited batting that hammered the game home.
Glenmore-I crushing victory stunned United-I
 |
Under cloudy conditions Glenmore after winning the toss, decided to bat first but they were on the backfoot quickly as they lost both openers under 20 runs. Waseem Alfat (42) and Hamza Paracha (18) batted with some determination helped Glenmore getting out of the pressure against some tight United bowling before they both fell right after water break. Muhammed Pasha (16) and Ram Kale (33) slowly rebuilt the innings to carry the score to 135. Then lost of 4 wickets in quick succession left Glenmore in a big hole. Ahmed Mirza strode to the crease with his team teetering on the brink of disaster and rescued the innings hammering a quick 72 runs (4X4, 4X6) pushing the score to 232 with good support of Nadeem Altaf. |
Despite the Glenmore fightback, United was confident to chase the total down, however Glenmore had other ideas. Mirza continued his great day removing Rizwan Saleem on the very first ball and striking again in his next over. Gurdeep Kang chipped in by bowling Hamza Tariq to leave United in dire straits. Skipper Manzoor Chaudhary (18) played sensibly to help rebuild his teams innings before being caught at point. Asim Gondal (16) also tried to move his team in the right direction before being caught by Mirza on the boundary. Glenmore continued to bowl a diciplined line and length continuing to take wickets. United was soon on 75/9 but Rubal Kapil played a late cameo taking the score over 100 before falling to a straight catch to Mirza at long on. Mirza finished the day with 72 runs, 2 wickets and 2 catches to take the Glenmore to their memorable win over United.
Stallions Thrilling Victory Over United 1
Everything was right on the day when the elite youth of Calgary had to verse the best team in the province, the true winners of John Ross; United Cricket Club. The T-20 started with United winning the toss and electing to bat first. The young and strong Stallions set their feet on the ground with high hopes of winning the game. As the openers of United, Rizwan and Hilton came on the pitch prepared to win, Stallions had their best bowler; Ans Kafait ready to rock them over. Rizwan Saleem got the team to a quick start but had to walk back only making 13 runs. The splendid wicket was taken by Laraib Khan, who has represented Calgary by playing Canada U-15. After bowling a great over, Laraib Khan came back even stronger by dismissing the one down batsman at only 1 run. Then the Furious Ans Kafait bowled a magnificent delivery, getting Hilton caught behind. Hamza Tariq showed great skills in taking the catch. Two experienced cricketers, Manzoor and Asim stayed on the crease and made a partnership of 84 runs where Manzoor scored 51 runs and Asim with 33. Soon after that, the wickets kept on falling as Kamil Vyas and Sudeepta Aurka bowled with great preciseness and accuracy. Ahmad Mirza provided Stallions with a supporting role. After the first innings, Stallions had to chase down 184 on the small ground. For instance it seemed as if the game was over but the true belief of the players led to a unique ending.
Stallion openers Hamza Tariq and Sameer Hassan went on with full support of the team. An incredible batsman Hamza, who has played Canada U-19 played a superb role in giving Stallions a great start. With Sameer by his side, Hamza Tariq went with full confidence. Hamza returning after making 16 vital runs, Raman Tarkan went out to aid Sameer with a partnership of 77 runs. Sameer played his captain’s innings by scoring 54 runs and Raman contributed by making 21 runs. Sudeepta and Veenu stayed on the pitch supporting each other where Sudeepta scored 11 and veenu with 15. Ahmad Mirza went on to make quick 13 runs by hitting 2 sixes. It all came down to the last over at which Stallions needed 21 runs to win. With Ans Kafait on strike and Rizwan Saleem bowling, it was a really tough call. Ans went on to hit four boundaries out of which three of them were 4s and a 6. After taking a single on the second last ball, it came down to a situation where 2 runs were needed from the last ball. Inderpaul Sidhu was on strike and after hitting a straight driver, the batsman managed to run 2 runs, leading to an unforgettable victory for Stallions.

Black Stallion win 1st game
Gentlemen,
Watching the Black Stallions (Calgary women cricket team) play their first game on Saturday against the under 11 & 15 mixed boys team. There was something exciting about watching the first cricket game ever played by a woman's team on the park. It was definately a note worthy event for what it meant to women's cricket and women atheletics in general.
Watching the girls in their intensity and enthusiasum made me really excited for what lies a head.
The girls have made huge strides in such a short amount of time. We have gone from having one player know how to bowl, to about 5 bowling with some accuracy. In terms of batting they are learning and practicing the proper techniques and are learning to understand how to read the ball and play acoordingly, sticking on the wicket and looking for runs.
This will really help in the big picture of things. The big picture being able learn and grow from every cricket opportunity be a match, training session or talk of inspiration. whether we win or not. is not as important as playing with Sportmanship, being able to shake hands with the team that just beat us and thanking them for the experience
On behalf of the women, let me take this opportunity to thank you for you unwaivering support and giving the women a chance to shine and make their mark in history, making their contribution to this great game Cricket.
Match Summary

What a way to kick off their season, after months and many long hours of practice the Black
stallion, were presented with a challenge of taking on the Cubs (U-11 and U-15) mixed team
under the guidance of Bobby and Faqer.
Saturday July 04,2009 will go down in history as the day the first ever Calgary women’s
cricket team (Black stallion) played their first match.
Amber Fraser captain of the day won the toss and on a cloudy, skidding wicket chose to put
the cubs in to bat hoping tthe bowler would use the condition to limit the Cubs to a low score.
The young boys showed great temperament to post 60 runs for 7 wickets in 15overs. Zafishan
was the peak of the bowlers taking 3 wickets for 12, Amber 4overs for 4run
Needing just 4 runs an over to chase down the Cub’s total, the lefthander/right hand combination
of the opening pair of Omaima and Amber rotating the strike proved quite disruptive
for the young bowler’s line and length, giving quite a few extra to aid the chase.
Needing 30 to win from 8 overs, Harshil’s direct throw had Omaima run out. Wajiha joined
Amber to keep the scoreboard ticking before a great off cutter from Huzafa Cheema got
Amber caught behind.
When Zafishan walked on the wicket with 12 runs to win, she needed two overs to bag the
win. Great day!, Great game! Great sportsmanship between the two team.
Great thanks to the Junior Coordinator Bobby for organizing the Cubs team and Umpiring
during the game, The parents who brought their kids to play and also volunteered to score.
Thanks to the CDCL executive for their continued support.

Glenmore-I celebrated Canada Day with a clean sweep against Cavaliers I
 |
Under sunny skies, Cavaliers I skipper Andrew Irving backed his team to chase and put the opposition in to bat. Backing his opening bowlers paid early dividends as Glenmore were quickly left teetering at 11-2. Some responsible batting from Parveen Saroye (38 – 2 4s 1 6) and Sukhjeet Gill (18) brought Glenmore back into the match however a Hassan Tariq double strike to remove Saroye and Trevor Defreitas (0) again handed the advantage back to Cavaliers I. Muhammed Pasha (43 - 2 4s 1 6) strode to the crease and added cautious and sensible 81 runs with Gurdeep Kang (36 - 2 4s 2 6s). to take the score to 169. |
With the loss of Kang, the skipper took more initiative pushing the score to 202 before departing for 43. A very determined captain’s innings to keep his side in the game. Ritesh Sharma and Hassan Tariq each picked up 3 wickets keeping Glenmore batting in check.
Cavaliers were looking very confident with their batting line up and considered the target can be easily achieved but Muhammed Pasha’s magical day continued with the ball. Bowling 10 on the trot, Cavaliers lost their top 6 batsmen before reaching total of 50 thanks to the skippers 5 wickets haul (10-0-31-5). The 7th wicket partnership for Cavaliers brought them back into the game when Grant Broadhurst (82) and Zahid Chaudhary (35) added over 120 until Chaudhary holed out to Saroye at deep mid wicket. Cavaliers needed some 30 runs with 3 wickets in hand and with Broadhurst still at the crease. Glenmore’s bowlers quickly seized the opportunity with Waseem Altaf and Gurdeep Kang picking up quick wickets to peg Cavaliers back at 20 runs short of the target with a sole wicket in hand. Broadhurst (82) trying to take second found himself short of the crease as Glenmore completed the clean sweep of Cavaliers.
This was a very exciting game which was played in true spirit. With this win Glenmore gets number 5 spot on the point table keeping them ahead of Cavaliers and Predators.

Historic Win for Stallions against Cavaliers 1 - 26/05/2009
Stallions, the contemporary youth team in Calgary, composed of the best U-19 players in the City, which derive from different clubs like Patriots, United I, Canasia, Cavaliers, Predators and so on have proven their potential, skills, discipline and commitment as one unified team, by an astonishing win over Cavaliers I in the T-20 match on Tuesday May 26, 09.
The game where Cavaliers I won the toss and elected to bat, had an early loss of wicket when Talha Paracha was dismissed by Kamil Vyas through a LBW. Afterwards, Hassan Tariq and Andrew Irving had a great partnership where Hassan Tariq scored 42 and Andrew Irving ended up scoring 53. As the partnership came to an end, the middle order started crumbling as Kishan got out after hitting a massive, 6 with his total of 8 and then Zahid followed along later. Through this hard fought innings, Cavaliers I managed to give Stallions a high target of 144. All the Stallions bowlers bowled well, with surprising performances by Kamil Vyas, Ans Kafait, Sudeepta Aurka and wonderful wicket keeping by Hamza Tariq.
The Stallions openers, Sameer Hassan and Veenu Goswami head towards the pitch with high hopes of winning the game. As the second innings commenced, Veenu Goswami had to walk off the pitch as he was runout. Bilal Khan, the number three batsman brought Stallions to a great start with his quick 28 and Hamza Tariq with another quick 30. Sameer Hassan then scoring 24 headed back to the pavilion. Stallions Captain, Sudeepta Aurka contributed immensely with his 31 not out. The innings ended with Stallions scoring 138, just six runs off their target. Due to the 6 penalty runs awarded to Stallions as Cavaliers I was penalized for slow overrate, handed the game to Stallions.
Cavaliers 1 “shocked” by debutant Glenmore - 17/05/2009
Word is that for the last few years the team finding itself promoted to Premier League has struggled to win any games at all let alone its first outing. Glenmore ended that trend on Sunday with a hard fought victory over Cavaliers-I.
Cavs won the toss at Riley Large and chose to bat under overcast skies, the clouds didn’t hang around for long however and any additional movement that Glenmore was hoping for didn’t eventuate. The Cavs openers got off to a watchful start and were beginning to look solid until a quick single opportunity left Irving just short of his crease and at the wrong end of a fantastic direct hit from covers by the youngest of the three Paracha brothers playing in this game. Kang picked up the second wicket of Chaudhary thanks to a fast flying thick edge that was snatched one handed at fly slip by W Altaf. Another run out, this time a mix up between opener Gajjar and Paracha which found them both at the same end with Gajjar the one without a crease brought a wobble to the Cavs innings.
They needed a partnership badly and the Paracha brothers weathered some excellent bowling from Kang and Mirza who was extremely unlucky to have 2 catches missed in the same over. Once the partnership reached 50 it looked like Cavs might completely get away from Glenmore until Nadeem Altaf one of the two Altaf Brothers playing for Glenmore was thrown the ball. Altaf managed to produce a probing spell of tight bowling and break the Paracha team while at the other end Waseem Altaf came on to bowl in tandem with his brother. It proved very successful for Glenmore with the pair picking up 5 wickets between them (Nadeem 3/25 from 10 and Waseem 2/32 from 9). The big wicket of Talal Paracha who holed out to mid-on for Cavs highest score of 44 started a batting collapse that threatened to end the innings shy of 150. A lower order rally of over 40 between Paul (floating) and Sharma meant that not only did Cavs bat out their 50 overs but they also posted a challenging target of 176.
Cavs put on some early pressure and again it was in the field that the first wicket came with the run out of Gupta who was unfortunately using a runner. Another 2 wickets and not many runs found Glenmore in a spot of bother at 3/23. It was a blow to Cavs that their opening bowler Chaudhary had to leave the field with an injury as he was bowling extremely tightly with only 4 runs coming from his 4 over’s. Glenmore desperately needed a partnership and found it as W. Altaf and Parveen Saroye batted extremely well taking the total to almost 100 before Altaf edged one to slip finally succumbing for 19 to some great bowling by Broadhurst who proved to be the pick of Cavs bowlers with the fantastic figures of 3/32 from his 10 over’s.
At this stage the game was still in the balance but as long as Saroye continued to stay at the crease it seemed that Glenmore would get home. The problem for Saroye was finding a partner as Glenmore lost 2 quick wickets with Gajjar finding some extra bounce to surprise H. Paracha and take a great catch at first slip to dismiss Kale. Mirza and Saroye kept the target ticking down and just when it seemed a foregone conclusion Saroye holed out to a great catch right on the boundary by Paul off the bowling of Gajjar who finished with the very good figures of 2/35 from his 9 over’s. Saroye’s innings of 75 was just what Glenmore needed and was the most outstanding contribution in the game from either team.
With runs still needed and only 3 wickets in hand the pressure was really applied as Cavs could sense another breakthrough could bring a quick end to the Glenmore innings. Mirza and captain Pasha batted with great composure especially young Mirza who was playing the innings of his life picking off the occasional boundary including a massive 6 into the still dry Riley park wading pool. Broadhurst again caused problems removing Pasha and bringing Cavs within 2 wickets of victory. Only 2 runs per over were needed at this stage and Cavs desperately needed wickets. They almost had one as Kang was dropped on the third juggle at backward square which proved to be the pivotal moment in the dying minutes of the game. Mirza negotiated the winning runs and was carried off the field with 37 not out.
Bahl’s Blitzkrieg leads rout - 13/05/2009
The opening T20 game for between the two Cavaliers teams was a spectacular affair, including a blistering knock by Abhijeet Bahl’s (Cavs II). Batting first, Cavs II had a steady start, but after losing 3 wickets in quick successions, their hopes dimmed for putting up a hefty total. But with Allan (Beast) and Bahl at the crease, the pendulum swung back, as they had better ideas. The onslaughts begin with Allan lofting some big hits over midwicket bagging 40+ runs to his name, while Bahl played a steady role. Right after the 10th over the floodgates opened and Bahl hit a couple of lofted drives for four, followed by 3 behemothic sixes. Out of the three, two were pulled over deep square leg and one over midwicket clearing the boundary by a good 25 meters on Riley large!! He wasn’t done yet, when in the very next over he heaved a straight six that went miles high going well past the Sightscreen. Bahl ended up seizing 82 runs to his name in merely 35 balls. Later, Cavs II’s tail got into the act with equal gusto and took the total to 172.
With a big task ahead, the two openers from Cavs I gave a perfect start to their team by scoring 53 in the first 5 overs. But, Adeel, the youngster from Cavs III, got the ball to zip with his pace and both openers succumbed to his fierce bowling in the same over. At 63 for 2, it seemed like Cavs I opened their can of worms, as Stallion Vaibhav Patel, took the next three wickets of some good caliber batsmen, thanks to smart bowling and proper field placement by the captain. The end came soon as leggie Jitesh Bhasin took the remaining wickets with his deceptive spin. Cavs I caved in only a total of only 99 runs and Cavs II sealed their first win of the inaugural T20 season at CDCL.
CANASIA “CANNED” - 13/05/09
A match that started as an underdog turned into a rather bad start for Canasia as they lost by 7 wickets. Kurram Chohan returning from his campaign with Canada’s national could not control the pesty hawks batsmen. Chasing a total of 149 set by Canasia with some good performances from Abid, and Nadeem Sheikh, Hawks were able to chase that down in the 19th over. Some spirited hitting by Gagan Saroa (65*) and Amar Mann (30*) helped Hawks recover from a moderate start to post a massive 90 runs from the last 9 overs of the game.
Yawar Leads Crown Home In Nail-Biting Finish - 12/05/09 It was a cold and wet Tuesday evening when the stallions set out to play their first T20 game against last season’s runner-up Crown. Even with the harsh weather conditions, the young Stallions were determined to play. Crown won the toss and elected to field first. Starting off with a great maiden first over Crown seemed to be very confident about themselves. Stallion’s openers started off good but failed to continue on with their partnership. After the first wicket, Stallions had a mini collapse until the middle order fought through the cold conditions to pull themselves back into the game. At the end Stallions put up a fighting score of 90 runs.
Crown openers set to face the new ball attack against the motivated and determined Stallions eager for an upset. Stallions received a perfect start from there bowlers as they restricted Crown to 34 in the first 10 overs. With tight line and length from the bowlers and alert fielding, the pressure had started to build up for crown. Stallions remained on top till the last over but the result was not in the favour of the youngsters. The game was forced till the fourth ball of the final over when crown scored their final run for victory. Despite the loss, Stallions is now beginning to show the league their true colours as they excel exponentially every game.
Colts has gotten a great start to the season with a clashing victory over Cavaliers III. - 10/05/09
Colts, a youth team has shown great commitment on the filed and proved their interest in this sport.Veenu Goswami and Vedant Sharma had a good partnership of about 60 runs.
Farhan picked up 5 good wickets.Kamil Vyas folled by picking up another 4 wickets. Cavaliers had a good start as they decided to bowl first. Cavaliers had gotten colts all out for only 141 runs. Indeed, Colts came back like never before and took the game away from Cavaliers. From Cavaliers, Adil and Devin bowled in pairs and were highly successful.
CDCL 1st T-20 tournament kicks off
he early start in the morning was given to us by the T-20 where the legendary teams, Crown I and St. Johns I competed against each other. The game was won by St. Johns and they commenced their season with a positive note. In the afternoon where the sun shined in our beautiful riley park.
United I and United II battled each other for victory. The game was won by United I. Congratulations for Ans Kafait and Rupal for their bowling in the match.
As the sun was about to set, we had the third T-20 of the day which was between Glenmore and Predators. Predators won the game just by 1 run, but were still happy to triumph the match. Glenmore fought back well and gave predators a tough time on the field.
Outstanding Achievement:
The Alberta cricket community got together last evening, Friday, May 08 at the Grenada Community Centre in northeast Calgary to informally celebrate an outstanding achievement by one of its own, Khurram Chohan (KC), playing for Canada in the recent World Cup qualifiers in South Africa). KC claimed the most wickets by a Canadian bowler, 15, and is now regarded as an inspiration to many youngsters in the province, especially here in Calgary.
It was great to see a few old-timers in attendance—Horace Goopesingh, Terry Raines, Thatchi Moorthy and Spencer Gooden, as well as Cricket Alberta Secretary Zafar Khan, the lone representative from Edmonton.
A video montage, compiled and assembled by Rathan Moorthy akes, was played, depicting all the wickets KC took in the competition, as well as batting and bowling highlights by the other Canadian players. Is was announced that Rathan Moorthy was described by a South African analyst as the best analyst from the “Associates”.
Alberta representatives at Cricket Canada (formerly the CCA) have been instrumental, recently, in creating opportunity for local players. With their continued and altruistic service, other local talents will eventually get their chances at the national and international levels.
There was plenty of food and beverages available, provided by new restaurateur, Amjad Shehzad.
The president of Cricket Alberta, Chris James, opened the evening’s celebration by asking the Second Vice-President of Cricket Canada, Ravin Moorthy, to say a few words. Ravin chronicled the cumulative efforts put in by so many in Alberta, over the years, to make this evening possible.
He also cited the great difficulty and uphill struggle Alberta cricketers continue to face in getting recognition at the national level, stressing that there is plenty of hard work yet to be done. Gord Oakes, Sam Narula, league president, and Spencer were amongst those who spoke. One of the evening’s speakers lamented what he labels as “political picks” and that it’s about time that players are picked solely on merit.
KC, and Rathan received plaques for their work/achievement.
It was, in general, a cordial and pleasant occasion.
C&DCL New Season Welcome Letter
With deepest regards, C&DCL welcomes you to an optimistic and enhanced 2009 season. Since the earliest commencement of this league in 1908, cricket has been played with sincere honor in this Heart of the West, our very own, Calgary. Cricket, a gentleman’s game, has been played here for over a century, and we as a family have gone through every theme of this league together, trying to make it better, bigger and acknowledgeable. Each and every one of us has true pride for this sport and for this league. We have further on developed, our hard work and commitment has been recognized all over Canada. Players from Calgary like Khurram Chohan have climbed a huge ladder and are highly successful in international cricket. We all have heavy influences on this league and we hope to carry it forward with moral integrity.
Cricket has changed over time, the most recent format of this sport; the twenty-20 has also been introduced to our league. This season, the league has T-20 cricket, where teams have been entered and will be playing the shorter and more aggressive version of this sport. As exciting it has been watching it on the television, we can now individually take part in that same excitement, in Calgary. Moreover, the team which wins the T-20 championship this year will be awarded $1000 and the runner up will be offered $250. We hope that you enjoy T-20 cricket in Calgary.
As this league has expanded over the many years, we have accepted three new teams this season. These teams include Patriots, St John’s and Crown II. We welcome these three teams to the league from our deepest heart. We hope to play good cricket with the new comers and have a valuable experience.
A new change that will occur this season will be that Division 1 will also be playing in colored clothing. There is an addition of a new cricket ground this year and it is at Inland. It is called the Inland Small, and it will also give us an opportunity for better cricket. Also, the pitch on Riley Large had been changed and will be accessible this season.
A very important and positive approach taken to win the championships this season will be through the defined concept of Play-Off. This season, teams will play in the Play-off manner, eliminating the point rule. This opportunity can highly aid your success this season.
The executives of C&DCL thank everyone form their deepest heart, for their true support in helping this league move forward and wish them the very best of luck for the season.
C&DCL hopes that you have a great season and get a chance to improve your game.

The
Alberta
Cricket
Association
has
planned
a
Twenty/20
tournament
for the
weekend
of May
3rd and
4th.
Four
teams
have
been
invited
to play
in
Calgary
at Riley
Park.
They are
Saskatchewan,
C&DCL
(Calgary),
E&DCL
(Edmonton)
and an
Alberta
Selects
team.
This
weekend
features
the
exciting
new
format
of
Cricket
–
Twenty/20
or T20.
This is
a
shortened
form of
the game
played
in
coloured
clothing
and
using a
white
ball.
The game
lasts
about 3
hours
and is
fan
friendly.
Never

cricket
because
it is
boring?
Not T20,
this
game is
anything
but
boring.
Come
down to
Riley
Park and
see what
the fuss
is all
about.
Twenty/20
was
started
in
England
in 2003.
Since
then the
growth
has been
at a
phenomenal
pace.
The
first
International
game was
in 2005
between
Australia
and New
Zealand.
In less
than 2
years
the ICC
has
taken
the new
form and
taken it
big time
with a
Twenty/20
World
Cup in
2007.
India is
the new
champions
of T20
cricket.
In
April of
this
year,
the
first
professional
franchises
were
started
in
India.
T20 is
the game
of
choice
for the
new
league,
IPL. The
ACA has
also
adopted
this
form for
the
tournament
on May
3rd and
4th. The
ACA will
use
these
games to
select
an
Alberta
team
that
will
travel
to
Toronto
for the
Nationals
held
from May
17th to
19th.
The 2008
Nationals
will
also be
T20
games.
This is
an
exciting
new form
of the
game of
cricket.
Come

Like the
previous
season,
the 2007
season
was full
of
several
entertaining
and
nail-biting
game.
Also
like the
previous
season,
the end
of
season
contest
between

would
determine
the
champion.
On
Saturday,
Canasia
took
their
final
step

championship
by
disposing
of a
gutsy
Crown
squad.
Crown
had
caused
trouble
for
several
teams
all year
and this
game was
no
exception.
Batting
first,
Canasia
rode an
opening
blitz of
78 from
Zulfikhar
Hussain
and a
quick
fire 42
from
Amir

a total
of 254.
Not an

but with
a
venomous
opening
spell
from
Khurram
Chohan
the
Crown
upper
order
collapsed
and
despite
a gutsy
62 from
Bakhir
Zaidi,
Canasia
prevailed.
With the
win by
Canasia,
St.
John's
was
guaranteed
to
finish
out of
the
title
hunt for
another
year but
with the
disappointment
of last
season's
end of
the year
tie
still in
their
minds
they
took the
field
for a
rain
reduced
38 over
match
with
Predators.
Predators
needing
an
outright
win to
take the
Nolan
Cup were
asked to
field
first
and had
St.

in early
trouble
before
they
settled
in and
put up
an
impressive
171 runs
from
